A Study of Amptutee Rehabilitation in Korea

Abstract
There thousand three hundred thirty two Korean amputees who came to Severance Hospital, Yonsei University College of Medicine for amputation surgery or for prosthetic training from January 1970 to December 1987 were studied in order to provide basic statistics and to demonstrate the changing trends in the amputation related data over the time period from before 1950¢¥s to 1987.
The major results are as follows
1. The amputation age group of the highest incidence was the third decade with alrr.ost 70% of amputations performed between 10 and 39 years of age.
2. Eighty three percent of the amputees were males and the percentage was higher in :he younger age groups.
3. The most frequent cause of amputation was accident. However, comparing the changing percentages of each amputation cause over the time period, accident and infection showed downward trend while peripheral vascular disease increased.
4. Frostbite, burn injury, train accident and Buerger¢¥s disease showed high multiple amputation rates.
5. The PTB type of the below knee prosthesis and the endoskeletal type of the above knee prosthesis were more frequently fitted recently.
6. The preprosthetic period after amputation and prosthetic training period after its fitting have become shorter over the time. The prosthetic training period was longer for amputees with higher amputation levels.
In Korea, many of the amputees are young and productive men who are injured by industrial or car accidents, and the numbers of the relatively older amputees by peripheral vascular diseases are on the rise. It is important to provide not only proper prosthetic training but also prevocational and vocational training in order for these potentially productive people to return to community as active and independent members.
